Several government-backed schemes provide free insulation for UK homes. Proper insulation is the single most effective way to reduce energy bills and keep your home warm.

Types of insulation available

Cavity Wall Insulation

~£295/year savings

Fills the gap between your inner and outer walls. Suitable for most homes built after the 1930s. Can save around £295/year on energy bills.

Typically free under qualifying schemes

Loft Insulation

~£250/year savings

Added to the floor of your loft space to prevent heat rising through the roof. Government recommends at least 270mm depth. Saves around £250/year.

Typically free under qualifying schemes

Solid Wall Insulation

~£400/year savings

For older homes without cavities. Can be applied internally or externally. More expensive but saves up to £400/year on heating.

Grants cover up to £15,000 of costs

If you receive qualifying benefits or have a low income, you can get insulation installed at no cost. ECO4 operates across England, Scotland, and Wales and has been extended to 31 December 2026. No successor scheme has been announced.

Warm Homes Local Grant

Running from April 2025 to March 2028, this council-administered scheme provides grants for insulation and other energy efficiency measures. Eligibility varies by local authority area.

Warm Homes Plan

The government's flagship £15bn programme includes insulation as a core measure. Low-income households can receive comprehensive insulation packages.
